1830s Family Tomb
Covington Cemetery No. 1, Covington, Louisiana
In 2018, Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC was hired by the owning family to restore their twelve-vault 1830s tomb in Covington, Louisiana.
All failed stucco was removed from the tomb and the surfaces cleaned with preservation-grade cleaners. Sound material was retained. Naturally-hydraulic lime-based stucco was applied to replace historic material where necessary, retaining the original detail and profiles of pilaster bases and capitals.
Several memorial tablets ranging in age from 1830s to 1890s were repaired and mounted to the side wall of the tomb. The tomb's remarkable statue of an angel resting on an inverted torch was cleaned and the roof stabilized. The tomb was then finished in historically-appropriate limewash.
