Vernacular Concrete Monument
A.M.E. Zion Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida
In 2021, Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC undertook the restoration of an early 20th century vernacular lot in AME Zion Cemetery, Pensacola, Florida. The lot, like many in the cemetery, was comprised of a subterranean vault and large, brick-and-concrete monument constructed by an historic local artisan.
The monument was very carefully lifted out of the collapsed vault and set aside while the void was filled. The wall was reconstructed and re-stuccoed. After the repairs had properly cured, the monument was re-set atop a solid foundation. The finished monument and wall were then painted with white mineral paint.
