Masonry and Marble Box Tomb
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans, Louisiana
In 2018, Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC performed several preservation and restoration treatments on a lot in Lafayette Cemetery No. 1 on behalf of the owning family.
In additional to removal of overgrown vegetation, the 1870s masonry box tomb with a broken ledger tablet was evaluated and restored. Each fragment of the broken ledger tablet were removed from the foundational "box" and laid atop a level platform. Rust staining on the surface of the marble was removed. The ledger was re-joined and re-mounted atop the masonry box using carbon fiber straps, as pillar-style supports were not possible on this lot.
The cross monument at the head of the box tomb was also restored using lime-based stone repair mortar.
