Pyramid Statuary
Metairie Cemetery, New Orleans, Louisiana
In 2019, Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC was contracted by a private family to restore the approximately 130 year-old statues on their iconic pyramid tomb in Metairie Cemetery.
Oak and Laurel obtained images of the original statues in Milan to better understand the affect and gesture of the female statue's missing hands. We then partnered with sculptor Sherry Tipton, who identified the statues' marble and crafted new hands from Carrara marble. The hands were attached to the female statue using pins and lime-based stone mortars.
In addition to the replacement of the long-lost statuary hands, Oak and Laurel also repaired the large marble urn present on the tomb. Significant bleach damage and material loss from years of pressure washing, while not reversible, were mitigated with several rounds of poulticing.
