1850s Family Tomb
Lafayette Cemetery No. 1, New Orleans, Louisiana
In 2017, a descendant of the family contracted Oak and Laurel Cemetery Preservation, LLC to restore this 1850s tomb. Due to lack of maintenance, the tomb roof had almost entirely failed.
The tomb roof and pediment were reconstructed using naturally-hydraulic lime-based mortars and renders. Failed stucco on the walls was replaced. The tomb's shattered tablet was transcribed and re-mounted to the side of the tomb. The cast iron fence enclosure was cleaned, rust converted, primed, and painted. Finally, the tomb was finished in historically-appropriate lime wash.
